WHAT IS CROSSFIT?
Crossfit a program specifically designed to improve fitness and health. It’s a program based on constantly varied, Functional movements, performed at high intensity. WODs (Workout of the day) are completed in classes. The community that arises when people do these workouts together is a key component of why CrossFit is so effective.
The program is designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual, regardless of experience. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change the program. The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind.
What does WoD refer to? I hear everyone using it.
WoD, or Workout of the Day, is the list of exercises for a given day. Since CrossFit is constantly varied, everyone is always anticipating what tomorrow’s will be.
WHAT IS P&PA CLASS?
P&PA stands for Pregnancy and Postpartum Athletism. These classes are specifically designed for pregnant and postpartum ladies. They focus on the changes the body are going through or have been through. They are programmed the same as all the other classes so you will still get a great workout. You must be 6 weeks postpartum if vaginal birth and at least 10 weeks for a C Section. Postpartum never ends so if you have “issues” since having you children then this class is perfect for you, as well as anyone currently injured and needs to work on scaled options.
DO I NEED TO BE IN SHAPE BEFORE STARTING CROSSFIT?
In short, no. Because every workout can be scaled for each individual’s fitness level, anyone can join in on the fun! We regularly have people that have literally never worked out a day in their life right next to a person who has worked out their whole life – and they are doing the exact same thing, just scaled appropriately to their respective fitness levels.
The only requirements are that you have a positive attitude, a willingness to work hard, to learn new things, and have the desire and passion to let us help you reach your fitness goals. You will succeed and see great results. We want to coach anyone desiring to get into the best shape of their lives.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM FUNDAMENTALS CLASS?
We will go through the 9 fundamental movements within Crossfit, and a few others thrown in for good measure. We will focus on technique to ensure you are moving safely. Without proper Technique, you won’t be able to transition to performing with intensity. It’s the way we keep you safe from injury.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM A CLASS?
Each class is one-hour long and can vary, such is the nature of CrossFit We start with a dynamic group warm-up that is designed to get the blood pumping, muscles and joints lose, and get you nice and warm. Next, we devote anywhere between 10-20 minutes on our ‘skill sessions.’ These are times when we are working on specific skills (as a group) to improve our technique and/or get stronger. Depending on that day’s focus, you might see barbell work, gymnastic work, plyo boxes, kettlebells, jump rope, and even running mechanics.
After that comes the ‘Workout of the Day’ or WOD. Before we start we go over all the movements and offer guidance towards the proper scaling of each exercise. After answering all your questions, we start the workout and a coach is always watching each person to be sure they stay safe and motivated. After the WOD, we cool-down and stretch and then you’re free to go!
People often look at the price and think it’s expensive. They will compare it to their local gym, when in fact they are not the same so it’s not really a true comparison. We offer much more, we offer small classes, we offer coaching every class, we offer a wide range of training possibilities, we offer support and advice, we offer a community of people and a unique atmosphere.
You’ll soon learn, that the money is well spent.
WILL I GET BIG MUSCLES FROM THIS?
This is mostly directed at the ladies…no you will not get “bulky” from doing CrossFit. Your body might change shape but this will happen if you passionate follow any exercise. For the fellas, the size you want to gain or lose will be largely determined by your nutrition. And this is something we can help you with as Claire has a diploma on Nutrition.
HOW WILL THIS HELP ME GET READY FOR (INSERT YOUR SPORT OR EVENT HERE)?
The beauty of CrossFit is that it develops a very broad base of fitness to make you capable of handling any task that life throws your way. You will also gain the confidence in yourself to know that if you can complete a WOD here, a day at work isn’t really all that tough. Paul has always played team sports and is Captain of the Stratford Upon Avon Men’s XI Hockey Team.
Ultimately though, when someone asks you what your training for, ‘Life’ is a perfectly good response because the benefits of regular exercise have been proven to keep to keep illness and disease at bay.
WHERE DO I PARK?
There should be sufficient parking in the area, please park in one of the spaces right in front of the building marked CrossFit Yield. In the event they are all taken, please find parking on the street.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?
Normal workout clothes. A towel and water bottle are optional but encouraged.
I’M SCARED/NERVOUS/DON’T THINK I’LL FIT IN…
We’ve all been there…the ‘new kid’ in class! Everyone is always open and friendly to new-comers. We promote a family-like atmosphere of support and camaraderie amongst our members. Someone will undoubtedly take you under their wing and help you through your introductory period. Everyone remembers what it was like at their first class and we all want to see each other succeed. Most importantly, we won’t ever have you do something that you are uncomfortable with or that is too advanced for your current fitness level.
